Project team for Healthy Hospitals - Engineering aid work at a hospital in Tanzania for master students

Purpose

The purpose of the project is to aid the Mkula Hospital in Tanzania by engineering aid work and knowledge. The aid will support the hospital technically and financially, in order to address its infrastructural issues. The project aims to help the hospital improve, and to enable it to provide more and safer treatment to the local and regional population. The work of the Healthy Hospitals project-group is performed on site by engineering master students that are combining engineering aid work with field studies for their master theses. The master students will be supported by experienced project members guiding the project. The project is carried out in close cooperation with the hospital and the hospital management in order to facilitate local ownership of implemented solutions and systems. The project does not define the subject or arrangement of the master thesis. The students should themselves organize their master theses, together with the university. However, if possible, the Healthy Hospital group can assist with thesis subject ideas and contacts at the university etc.

Applicants

The Healthy Hospital project is seeking two engineering master students, with an interest in aid work. At least one of the students should study the Infrastructural and Environmental Engineering master program, preferably with an interest in water and wastewater engineering. The students will conduct a field study in Mkula, Tanzania, for at least eight weeks and should be prepared for departure in january/february 2019.

Background

The Healthy Hospitals project has been working together with two different hospitals in Tanzania with architectural and engineering aid since 2015. In 2015-2017, the project worked together with Kolandoto Hospital during three phases of the project. In the first phase, the project team conducted surveying to identify the hospital’s infrastructural needs and challenges. Additionally, finances were sourced through partners in Sweden in order to be able to make infrastructural improvements on the hospital. In the second and third phase, the project team assisted the hospital management to implement the improvements that had been decided upon. The major improvements at Kolandoto Hospital includes increase in water supply through a new water pump, a solar powered electricity backup system, and construction of a emergency department. The Healthy Hospital project has since 2017 been working with another hospital, the Mkula Hospital.

Mkula Hospital: Phase 1

The initial infrastructural surveys in the first phase was conducted during the spring of 2018. A Survey Report was conducted, describing the hospitals infrastructural current status and future challenges. The Survey Report also contains a list of suggested future infrastructural improvements, which will be guiding the coming phases of the project. Additionally, a new groundwater pump was installed during Phase 1 to increase the current water supply.

Phase 2

The hospital’s infrastructural issues mainly affects water supply and wastewater management and in Phase 2, the water supply and wastewater systems needs major investigation and evaluations. Additionally, several minor implementations to achieve immediate improvements should be undertaken.

Timeframe

Phase 2 is planned to start during early 2019, and continue throughout the spring. Preparations for the field study, such as project and practical planning, and work with applications for scholarships and fundings should start as soon as possible.

Bli en av oss

  • Aktivera dig i volontärprojekt
